TVA Energy Programs Affecting Basic Electric Rates

Variable Priced Interruptible (VPI) - Available to customers with actual kW demands over 5,000 kW. Several VPI programs with different rate structures exist for customers willing to curtail their power usage within 5 to 30 minutes notifications by TVA. The amount to curtail is contracted as VPI and the remainder of the total load is contracted as the standard firm power rates. The electricity portion contracted as VPI is billed with a reduced charge for kW demand and the kWh charge is variable, based on TVA's cost to produce plus a markup. Possible savings of between 20-30% can be realized. The energy charge will be dependent upon the customer's ability to use VPI. There are various curtailment time periods for different VPI levels.

  • Start-Up and Test Power - Firms can be eligible for start-up and test power which eliminates demand charge for 6 months
  • Expanded Growth Credit Program - TVA sponsored growth credit savings program for the first 3 years of a new or expanding firms. The credit is $6.00 per kW demand. A summary of the program follows:
    • Program's objective is to encourage new and expanded electrical loads where the price of electricity significantly impacts location, expansion, or fuel choice decisions.
    • Eligibility is based on Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes, and on the size of the new load or expansion load. Qualifying commercial and industrial groups are mining, manufacturing, transportation, electric, gas, and sanitary services. The actual determination for qualification is based on the SIC code.
    • The minimum new load to qualify for the program must be at last 100 kW. For expansion customers, the new load (expansion load) must be at least 100 kW greater than the highest load in the previous 12 months.
    • The program deducts $6.00 per kW from the demand charge for 3 years.
